Just another short blog entry

I am so stressed! So many projects due before Chinese New Year! One of the most frustrating one was the literature multimedia poem that I have just finished. Please check it out:

Personal Recount Assignment 3 (Recount of events on Thursday, 17 January 2008)

It is already Thursday today, and tomorrow, Friday, is my favourite weekday, as it is the last day of school in the week and I can finally relax a little bit after a tiring and long week at school. Compared to the past few weekdays, today is the most interesting one.

School started off with my favourite subject, Design and Technology and I was looking forward to it since the start of the week. It seemed like I was only one that looked forward to this week's Design and Technology lesson, as many of my classmates either forgot to bring or did not do their project research that is due today (everyone in class were busy filing and doing the research early in the morning before morning assembly).

Today's Design and Technology lesson was a little different from last week's as we had some drawing exercises to do. We were taught perspective drawing and was instructed to try it out by drawing the school canteen. It was harder than it seemed.

Next, it was Mathematics lesson and everyone was feeling excited and could not stop mentioning about the fire drill which was going to take place (my guess of the fire drill happening today was accurate, but the time was at 12.45pm instead of 9.15am).

After three boring lessons of Mathematics, it was finally time for Literature, one of my favourite subjects. Everyone was starting to feel restless and I could not pay well attention as the class was making too much noise by continuous discussion about the fire drill. I think that Mr Daniel Tan must have felt that he could no longer control the class, as he then asked the class to dramatize the poem 'Dulce et Decorum est' by grouping us into four groups, each representing a community of people (The Air Force, The Navy, The Communists and The Nazis), during World War I which the poem is set in. It was a really fun activity but it made the class even more vocal (nosier).

Finally, at 12.45pm, the much anticipated Fire Drill started. Some of my classmates acted like hooligans by screaming and jumping out of their seats and rushed towards the door. Mr Daniel Tan than shouted at them to sit down and listen for instructions. Later, we switched off the lights and fans, locked the doors (Those two unnecessary actions to be taken during a fire drill was mentioned by Mr Chia and we heeded them just for fun) and headed for the school field.

When we were at the field, everyone started playing with the new artificial grass and the black rubbery 'things' underneath (instead of listening out for further announcements) once they sat down. After a while, we started to feel the intense heat and started discussing about Miss Hashimah, but don't ask why. (for some unknown reason, almost everyone hates her (I am the exception))

Everyone was feeling happy (except for me) that we missed about 15 minutes of Literature because of the Fire Drill.

After the Fire Drill ended, we were allowed to go home (another reason why everyone was happy).

Oh, I have completed the third and last post for this assignment! Hurray!

My third week at school (Personal Recount Assignment 2)

It is the third week of school already! How fast time passes really amazes me as it seems that I have only attended school for a day only. Although it is only the third week, lessons have resumed to normal like last year's and we have been given quite a few projects already.

Last time, when I was in Primary school, my older friends always tell me that Secondary School is going to be stressful and I have to spend a lot of time and effort to excel, but I dismiss their saying and even once said "How hard would it be?". Now I have finally understood what they mean. Projects, tons of them and homework too!

Although I am already feeling stressful about the amount of projects I have, I feel like I am having fun and learning many things when I am doing a project. The largest scale project now is the upcoming Online Project Work, or the OPW. Although the OPW seems like a project that would be hard to do and would take forever, I am actually looking forward to it. I have already come up with a few plausible ideas for a good piece of work.

With more things to learn and more projects to do, 2008 seem like a year which I can learn a lot and a good year for me to improve my grades. Oh yes, everyone student was told to do some kind of target setting on Monday morning according to the expected results for me calculated by some computer with a quite-good-but-there-is-still-areas-that-can-be-improved-on formula. Although I was the overall first in my class last year (I am not boasting, but just using statistics for calculation and explanation of concepts), I was expected only to get a Mean Subject Grade of 2.2, which is not quite spectacular. I even felt that the computer underestimated me in some areas, like English, Literature and Geography although I did quite well for these subjects last year. Instead, I was expected to score well in those subjects which were not-up-to-expectations last year. I felt confused (maybe not confused, just irritated for some reason). After discussing with some of my classmates, I realised that the expected grades were calculated with reliance most on our PSLE scores, not our past-year grades. One good example is Pratahban, who had a score of 260, was expected to get a Mean Subject Grade of 1.0!

Of the many interesting things that happened on the first half of the week, the most interesting was when we were taking photos at dangerous angles for the ridiculous Mathematics project which required us to measure the diameter of the large school crest mounted on the outside wall of the school auditorium.

So far, the week has been quite normal and nothing really special happened, but we should be expecting a fire drill tomorrow at 9.15am (just a guess by me to try to prove that I am good at predicting things. I will hope that it is accurate, because I just got a feeling of it), which is going to be quite an experience for us.

Okay, I have nothing left to talk about. I just hope that the remaining half of the week will be more interesting and fun-filled!

Personal Recount Assignment 1 (Recount of events on Saturday, 12 January 2008)

Yesterday was a really great day! I woke up late in the morning and had breakfast while reading the newspaper. I personally have a favour for Saturdays as there are always car reviews on the Today newspaper and The Straits Times which I find very interesting (as I love cars). But what is so special about this specific Saturday? I will tell you later, so read on.
I got about my normal routine that I take during Saturdays. I finished my remaining homework that I was too lazy to finish on Friday, and then I practised on the Piano for about an hour and a half (quite lengthy and boring, right?).
After completing the two vital tasks listed above, I finally had some free time and proceeded excitedly to spend some time with my loyal 'best friend', my metal-cased and plastic-parted laptop!
Like my father, I spend time on the computer playing games and watching videos on Crunchyroll (a website with a wide variety of Japanese anime, Chinese serials, movies and much more...). It was already quarter-to-one already.
Suddenly, something struck my mind. I felt that I forgot something important. I looked at my watch. "Quarter-to-one", I said to myself. I looked at my watch again, but my mind seem not to be able to link 'quarter-to-one' to anything. As I continued on my game, I suddenly started to remember that I had a prize-giving ceremony at quarter-past-one to attend!
I immediately rushed to the kitchen and looked for some instant noodles I could have for a quick lunch. Within three minutes, my lunch was ready. I struggled to gobble down my food quickly (I had some kind of Korean Kimchi-flavoured 'claypot' ramun (meaning handmade noodle of some kind)) as it was quite hot (referring to food that is hot literally and not hot as in spicy) and spicy. I took fifteen minutes to finish my lunch.
I quickly changed into my school uniform and got going (have you guessed what prize-giving ceremony am I going to attend?). It was about a five-minute run and I was relieved I made it in time. I got my seat number and sat down eagerly.
I was attending the Edusave Scholarship prize-giving ceremony and very eager to receive my prize money (you must have thought that it would be something grand and felt that I let down your hopes, right?). While I waited for my name to be called, I kept calculating mentally if I was among the top five percent or ten in my school, which in each case I would receive $500 or $300 respectively. Although I knew I would not get $500, I kept telling myself there is always a 'maybe'.
It was finally my turn. I went up the stage (while cameras snapped away (from people I do not know)), and received my certificate and cheque from Mr Sin Boon Ann. I thought he must have recognised me and called me 'Oscar' as this was the fourth year in a row that I got this award.

I ecstatically got back to my seat and looked at the cheque, 'THREE HUNDRED DOLLAR ONLY'. I felt ashamed at myself for some reason. Later, I recalculated my chances of getting $500 and comforted myself when the possibility is obviously 0%.

When I got back home, I found my Grandfather, Grandmother, Grandaunt, Auntie and my parents all waiting for me and congratulated me on my award. They decided that I deserved a treat and asked me where I would like to go for dinner (Of course they would not listen as when old people ask "Where do you want to have dinner?", they are just asking for fun and the final decision is always made by them). They decided to go for a Korean Cuisine for dinner ("Not again", I said, but to no avail).
At sundown, we headed towards Novena Square (for dinner at the Korean Restaurant the old folks decided) and we were caught up in a traffic jam along Pan-Island Expressway, and I started swearing at people like I always do when I am irritated. Strangely, we managed to get there on time.
We were at the Korean restaurant.
I looked at the menu, looking for what I would like to have for dinner. After twenty minutes, I still could not decide and gave in to the others' request to order food and share. When the food came later, they did not look tasty to me at all, but I realised that Korean Cuisine is actually very tasty! I munched down a lot of food and very soon I got full.
After everyone was stuffed to their brim with food so tasty to resist, we went home very satisfied.

First Week at School

At last, the boring holidays are over, and I can return to school to start a new year in Secondary 2, with my classmates, some which I hate, and some which are unforgettable. Starting a new year in Victoria School is none like any other school. In the past, every New Year in schooling will mean working with different people entirely, but in Victoria School, the classmates are the same and most of the teachers are unchanged and will remain the same.

My first week at school is mostly boring, but far better than the holidays. School life is difficult to adapt to after two long and dreary months spent mostly on sleeping, eating and playing. Now when school has just started, I have to change my lifestyle to wake up early in the morning to go to school. Attending lessons feel kind of strange and awkward, like a new experience every new morning. I guess I just have to get used to it again.

Though there are no significant changes in my school life, I encountered a few new teachers in school, like the new History teacher Mr Thiru, which I cannot decide whether I like him or not, and my new Higher Mother Tongue teacher Ms Xie, which teaches efficently with the use of English to explain Chinese phrases. I still have to pay attention to the lessons in school as the main reason I am at school to learn as much as I can, and try to excel in all topics this year.

The only thing I did not like about the new school life is that my classroom is on the fourth level, which is harder than I thought as I had to climb 72 steps of the staircase with my oversized school bag.

Like it or not, 2008 will be a good chance for me to show what I am capable of, I will try hard (If not my best) to excel in my studies and maybe make it to IP programme. I will have to make full use of this chance for me to show my true potential and outclass the others (if I can it would be great).
Finally, I will have to set targets and goals for the year 2008. One goal I set for myself is to reach a height of 155 cm and to also get the Edusave Scholarship Award 5th year in a row.

2008 will be a promising year ahead, and I hope I will be able to make full use of this year to achieve more!
